Upcoming DOCshop Documentary Workshops - Spring & Summer 2017

About the DOCshop Workshops

DOCshop workshops are a crash-course in documentary filmmaking. For the novice or the seasoned filmmaker, each workshop is geared to provide insight and knowledge of documentary theory, history and process.

DOCshops currently offers several workshops ranging in length from several hours to the advanced workshops that extend up to ten days.

Each workshop is lead by producer Carl Crum, who has been making documentaries for a living for over 20 years. He has won numerous awards and honors including four Emmy awards for Outstanding Achievement in Documentary for the docu-series One Square Mile and NPS Film of the Year for the Big Bend National Park documentary Land of Contrasts. He has also produced over 600 interview based documentary shorts for a variety of clients.

Carl has an MA in Cinematography, and a BFA in Cinematography and Photography. Carl and his wife Elisabeth have owned the production company Brazos Film & Video LLC since 2000. Through BFV they have produced dozens of documentaries over topics ranging from anti-ballistic missiles to cockfighting.

Carl has lead numerous workshops in documentary production and theory. Most recently Carl lead a workshop for the Texas Association of Museums on documentary film as an interpretive tool.  He has lead workshops and filmed documentaries at various schools and community centers throughout the United States.

Can't make it to one of our scheduled workshops? We can bring DOCshops to your school or organization for intense on-site training, or create a private DOCshop to address your specific needs.

I would recommend this workshop to anyone, novice or someone seeking a refresher course or someone who is currently a documentary filmmaker but who simply wants to hone his / her craft by getting personal coaching from someone of Carl’s calibre. I cannot say enough good things about this workshop…….it has totally convinced me that I am chasing the right dream and it has provided a solid floor / foundation upon which I will now build my own work.
The hands-on work on Day Two is just truly invaluable. Being able to see how to start with nothing and finish with a really polished, professional end product is fantastic, being able to work alongside Carl every step of the way was brilliant and I keep replaying it in my head to ensure I memorize it for future reference. The attention to detail that Carl brings to every aspect of his craft speaks to why he has achieved the success he has…..great lessons and habits to pick up as I start on my own journey as a documentary filmmaker. The time spent in post-production was truly enjoyable……I fully appreciate how Carl let me drive but was there over the shoulder to coach all the way and step in as needed, it was just fantastic for me !

“Carl Crum lead his two day documentary workshop with the cinematography students at Stephen F. Austin State University. Our cinematography students loved it!  They learned a great deal about the history, pre-production, production, editing and the distribution of documentary films.  They even went out and made short documentary films. It was one of the best workshops I have ever attended and I have been teaching at the university level for forty eight years. If you are a serious film student and desire to do documentary films, then this workshop is a must!”
